I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to C# programming in it’s entirety, not just with Kinect development. So when it was announced Beta 2 was available I pounced unknowingly into the undocumented depths of version migration. While the Kinect for Windows team have done a fine job with the update, it’s just not that well documented for average Joes like me.

Over the weekend I spent almost every waking hour learning the ins and outs of C# and the soon-to-be beloved Kinect SDK. After following bits of the Quickstart guides mentioned previously I decided to go it alone and see what came out. There’s a couple of things I’m sure I could share with you, here.

Let me get this out from the off – I am not a software developer. I’m an Interactive Media Producer which means… a lot of things. But what I’m used to is developing for the web. Your HTMLs, your JavaScripts, your PHPs. This C# malarkey is alien to me.

My first Kinect app

Kinectimals. EA Sports Active 2. Dance Masters. There’s a bunch of games available for Kinect at launch, but nothing that made a massive furore in the gaming market. There’s no stand out Modern Warfare- or Fable-type game out there at the moment and there’s probably a good reason for that rather than just because it’s not had a chance to yet.

The Kinect SDK was due to be released "sometime in Spring" and in was announced yesterday almost out of the blue that this day would be today. Awesome. So From about half five this afternoon I've been playing around with a few basics of the SDK.

And so it begins. Choosing an angle for the app. You've got to look at different elements of who you're designing it for, what they would require and how best to present that information. So I did just that in a brainstorm like all the cool kids do.

There's plenty of obvious places for a mobile app to be implemented – think The Gadget Show Live or the Tate Modern gallery – where there's more information that needs to be gathered on a personal level. But why would anyone need or even want to use a mobile app while they're pottering around Legoland Windsor?
